The Walking Dead’s Daryl and Lydia have formed an unexpected bond over the past two seasons – and it seems that the actors Norman Reedus and Cassady McClincy are the same.
In fact, one emotional scene left Cassady in tears thanks to Norman, and Daryl’s unexpected protective instincts kicked in for the former Whisperer.
The scene in question happens during season 10 episode Silence The Whisperers (episode four), where Lydia needs help after being attacked by other survivors as a reaction to her mother Alpha’s (Samantha Morton) decapitation of members of Alexandria.
During the scene, Lydia opens up about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her mum, who leads the evil Whisperers, and how she was made to believe it was her dad who was the bad guy.
Recognising her scars as someone who suffered abuse as a child himself, Daryl pulled her in for a hug – which Cassady wasn’t expecting, and left her feeling emotional in real life over the difficult scene.
As a result, she had to walk away after the director yelled cut to compose herself.
The reveal came as a new Easter egg video released by the Walking Dead team – revealing that Norman, who plays the brooding and sharp-tongued survivor, had made a habit of improvising sweet moments that shock Cassady as she plays troubled youngster Lydia.
Previously speaking to Entertainment Weekly during their first bonding moment in season nine, he said: ‘[Daryl] caught a glimpse of the switch marks on her arm, so when she does it, he grabs her arm and he pulls the sleeve down.
‘He’s like, “I knew it. I know what that looks like”, because Daryl was an abused kid as well.’
‘He knows what a birch tree switch can do to an arm, what it looks like — so when he catches a glimpse of it, he’s pulling down the sleeve to let her know that he knows what that is.’
He later added: ‘Now once you break that ice, you can start to have a conversation. She’s not going to take that well.
‘She’s not going to just cry in the corner. She’s going to keep on fighting, which is what Daryl would’ve done too.’
However, their newfound bond could come back to haunt them both, after Lydia ran from Alexandria after being used by Carol (Melissa McBride) as bait to break down the Whisperers defences.
After Alpha told her horde of Whisperers that she’d killed her, Gamma (Thora Birch) is left doubting her commitment to the group upon the realisation she’s alive.
The Walking Dead returns on 23 February on AMC in the US and Fox in the UK.
