The free Ver. 2.0.0 update for Super Mario Maker 2 adds Link, a new speedrun mode, and new enemies and obstacles.
Things have been surprisingly quiet on the Super Mario Maker 2 front recently, with Nintendo almost seeming to have abandoned the game since its release in June.
They’ve made up for that today though, with the announcement of an unexpectedly weighty update that, equally unexpectedly, adds Link from The Legend Of Zelda.
Many have wondered whether the logical extension of Super Mario Maker is a similar title but for 2D Zelda titles, but we’re not sure if this update makes that more or less likely.
The update works by adding the Master Sword as an item in the NES Super Mario Bros. game style (but not any of the others) and when Mario picks it up he’ll be transformed into Link, complete with the ability to use the sword, his shield, a bow and arrow, a dash attack, a downwards attack, and bombs that can blow up walls.
That all seems a bit like overkill for a normal Super Mario level, but we’re sure fans will be up to the task of creating new levels that take advantage of the new abilities.
It’s not the first time Link has been in a side-on adventure, with most of Zelda II on the NES playing out that way, as well as short sections in Link’s Awakening (which also includes a number of Mario cameos).
Link was also in the original Super Mario Maker on the Wii U and 3DS, as were a huge range of other Nintendo characters as essentially unlockable skins. For some reason they weren’t included in the sequel, but they never had any of their abilities and were just cosmetic extras.
Other new inclusions for the update include newer Super Mario items such as P Blocks, Dash Blocks, and frozen coins, as well as previously missing enemies such as Spike and Pokey (you’ll know them when you see them).
There’s also a new speedrun mode that allows you to compete against the ghosts of other players and against the clock. Each ‘Ninji Speedrun’ event will last for about a week, with new courses being released for each one.
The Super Mario Maker 2 Ver. 2.0.0 update will be released for free this Thursday, 5 December.
