A retired jockey died after falling over at her home and landing on a straw.
Elena Lindsay Struthers-Gardner, 60, suffered ‘unsurvivable brain injuries’ when her eye was impaled on the metal drinking straw.
She was taken to hospital in Southampton on November 22 but died the following day when her family took the difficult decision to withdraw life support.
A post mortem found that she had died of a traumatic brain injury suffered at her home in Poole, Dorset, after falling over.
An inquest into her death opened yesterday in Bournemouth.
Coroner Brendan Allen heard only brief details ahead of a full hearing next July.
