Apocalyptic pictures have emerged showing the devastation caused by a huge fire which tore through around 900 cars.

Firefighters worked through the night to tackle the blaze at second hand car lot Motorhog, in the village of Carcroft, near Doncaster, after flames started to spread at 10pm on Friday evening.

At first they thought 30 cars had been affected, with the full extent of the damage only revealed once the fire was brought under control by 1pm Saturday.

Photographs show the charred remains of the vehicles, some of which are piled on top of each other.

It’s not yet known what caused the fire, but the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has launched an investigation.

In a statement, they said no one had been injured in the blaze which happened on Bentley Moor Lane, on the outskirts of the rural village.

More than 40 firefighters from across Yorkshire, along with a police drone unit, were at the scene during the fire’s peak.

Huge flames and plumes of smoke were sent into the air and could be seen from miles around and people were warned to stay away from the area.

An initial statement that said 30 cars were affected was revised up to 200 on Saturday morning and then again to 900 by noon.

By 8am on Saturday, all but three fire crews had been stood down and by 1pm the fire was fully extinguished.
